With the Common Admission Process (CAP) conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) coming to an end on Wednesday, there are over 50,000 engineering seats yet to be filled.

These seats will now be filled at institute level across the state. However, experts feel that around 30,000 engineering seats will go vacant this year.

A DTE official said, “Total seats available for engineering admissions under CAP are 70,858. However, as the CAP rounds are coming to an end, over 33,000 seats are likely to go vacant. In addition to these33,000 against CAP seats that will be surrendered for institute level admissions, there are already 22,246 seats separately allotted for institute level admissions and 7,076 minority seats.

“Now admissions will be done for these seats at the institute level individually. Though candidates without Common Entrance Test (CET) score will also be admitted under these institute level admissions as per the rule, around 30,000 seats are still likely to go vacant at the end,” the official said.

He added, “Students prefer only top-rung or at least known institutes. Hence, ample number of seats will go vacant in newly-opened and institutes in rural areas.”
